Read Across America Week

We celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday as well as the Cat in the Hat's 51th Birthday with Read Across America Week activities for students in grades K-8. Monday was Grinchy Green Day, so our students were all decked out in as much green as they could find in their closets!  On Tuesday, everyone participated in Fox in Socks Day. Students wore crazy, mismatched, and wild socks, and made sure to roll up their pant legs to show off those socks. Wednesday featured I Am Not Going to Get Up Today, because we had no school on this day. The kids were asked to wear their jammies all day and curl up with a good book at home! Thursday was Dr. Seuss's ABC Day. We had fun reading everyone's t-shirts and sweatshirts! On Friday, was the Read Across America Assembly in the Commons Area. The kids had a chance to "Toilet Paper" their teacher. Students' names were drawn using signed slips returned from home verifying that they had read at least 15 minutes each evening during the week. Other prizes were also awarded at the assembly. Students also participated in other fantastic events in the library and their classrooms throughout the week!
The event the students enjoyed the most was getting to see their teacher wrapped in toilet paper at our assembly on Friday. Students had been encouraged to read at home throughout the week and turn in signed parental forms each day. These forms were used for drawings in which students in each class could win free books and also one student was drawn to participate in the the "TP"ing of their teacher. Students winning books were Brayden, Hannah K., Hannah S., Daniel, Cade, Mikala, Alexis, Sam, and Jace. The lucky students that got to "TP" their classroom teacher were Kaylee, Devin, Jordyn, Jack, Joey, Savannah, Morgan, Sam, and Jace. The fun began as the music started and the students mummified their teachers with toilet paper. The younger students had some help from their classroom paras and all teachers ended up covered from head to toe! Then the teachers whose class had the greatest percentage of forms returned throughout the week got to "TP" Mr. McDaniel. First Grade teacher, Ms. Laudemann, was the lucky teacher and she had a little help as she completely covered Mr. McDaniel in toilet paper.
To close the assembly everyone sang Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss. Students were all given Dr. Seuss pencil erasers from the school library. Then the students all enjoyed birthday cupcakes as a treat from their teachers. Our fun Read Across America celebration confirmed one of Dr. Seuss's many humorous yet insightful quotes, "from there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere."
