Oreos Roll Across the Curriculum

On Thursday, October 6, the K-5 faculty and students arrived at school all decked out in black and white anxious to see exactly what an Oreo cookie could teach them.  This event, designed by Projects by Jen and tweaked by the White City teachers, proved to be very fun and educational.  “Milk’s Favorite Cookie” was used to explore concepts in reading, math, science, writing, art, and physical education.  Students rotated through eight learning centers conducted by the faculty and paras.  Making predictions, performing experiments, creating art, jingles, and stories, weighing and measuring, and reading were among the activities students experienced.  Several other activities, including an Oreo Stacking Contest, were held in the classrooms throughout the week.  Data from the Stacking Contest was posted online to Jen’s website.  There were 712 classrooms with 14, 382 students from 45 states, Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Scotland, and the Virgin Islands who posted their data to the website.  The average height of the Oreo stack was 18.  We had several groups of exceptional stackers who exceeded the average!  Who knew that Oreo cookies could be as educational as they are tasty?  Students at White City Elementary are convinced it is so!
