JH Charter Math Activities |

| After a year of planning, the White City Junior High Charter School is in full swing this year. The Charter School is designed to give students additional classroom experience with "real-world" mathematics applications. Every student in junior high has an additional 40-minutes of math instruction each day. Students are divided into 3 groups with representatives from each of the grades in the junior high. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from across all three grades during this time. | |

The first nine weeks in charter school math featured consumer math skills. Students learned to comparison shop and decided that the only way to decide which pizza restaurant had the best price was to calculate the cost of the pizza per square inch! How about that for using those math skills? Maintaining checkbooks and checkbook registers was also part of the curriculum. Students also worked with shopping on a budget and discovered that sales tax is an added expense. |

During the second nine weeks students focused on using math in entertainment. Students enjoyed playing several games and visiting websites that required the use of math in the game. Planning an evening of entertainment for two proved to be an eye-opening experience for students. After calculating what they might be able to earn in an entry-level job as a 16-year old, students soon realized that an evening of entertainment including dinner out and a movie, skating, or bowling took quite a bit of their income. Learning about careers in math was the focus for the third nine weeks. Participating in career explorations, students selected three career choices in which they had an interest. For each of those careers, students identified which high school classes they would need to take as an introduction to that career, what type of education would be required, what salary they might expect to earn, and the advantages and disadvantages of working in that chosen profession. |
