What a winter we are having!  The snow is beautiful….a winter wonderland!  The counseling office is back into the office!  A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Rice for letting me use the Library as my Counseling “digs” for the past month and a half! They were AWESOME to put up with all of my “counseling items”!!!

The months of November, December, and January have been spent on the Character Trait, “CARING”!  The entire school made hearts and wrote what acts of Kindness and Caring each would pledge to uphold.  Chains made of various Character Colors were  attached to each heart and are placed throughout the school.  The Character words were labeled on their particular color of chain.  This symbolizes that we all want to spread a “Chain Reaction” of Kindness and Caring to everyone!  This has been an activity tribute to Rachel’s Challenge.  *See article on “F.O.R. Middle School and High School Groups Begin at WCS”.

“Caring” videos were shown, games were played, and books were read to reiterate our Caring Character word and trait.  Many discussions were held in the classrooms also during guidance sessions.

The entire school also participated in bringing Personal Hygiene Items for Care and Share to be distributed to many during the Christmas Holidays.  Mrs. Parker is to be commended on her charitable and compassionate time and work she gives to this huge endeavor during the season of giving.  A huge thank you to her husband, Leland, and to their son-in-law, (Mrs. Stilwell’s husband), Monte (and Parker) for picking up all of the boxed items to take to Council Grove for us!!

High School students are setting their sights on “Life after High School”.  Many have applied for various technical colleges, community colleges and four year colleges.  Some will be working in their family businesses or at other jobs.  Many scholarship opportunities are available for students.  Seniors have been filling out applications and working on resumes and letters.  Due dates are fast approaching and there will be senior work days such as the one held last Saturday.

There was a Character Ed. Assembly celebrating CARING last Friday and many were honored with the Caring Certificate.  Birthdays were celebrated from Nov. to Jan.  The sixth and seventh graders formed the word CARING on the gym floor with their bodies and then the eighth graders along with the high school students made a heart circling the word CARING!  Most of the students that belong to F.O.R. wore shirts that day to symbolize CARING and KINDNESS.  *See article on “F.O.R. Middle School and High School Groups Begin at WCS”

In February we are celebrating and talking about the Character Word and Trait, “FAIRNESS”!  This Character Word is the “Orange” word!-----Mrs. Gant, Counselor

 October 1

Hello!  I can’t believe the school year is a quarter of the way through!  During August and September, we celebrated and learned about what it takes to be RESPONSIBLE!  The Responsible Character Word is symbolized with the color, “green”.  Students in Kindergarten through Eighth grades discussed Responsibilities they have at school, home, and in our community.  We also discussed “Gus”, our Therapy Dog’s Responsibilities and our Responsibilities with Gus.  Video movies were also watched about another dog (one of Gus’ friends) and how children were responsible for the dog.

The month of October, we have been talking about RESPECT.  The Respect Character Word is symbolized with the color, “yellow”.  Students in the Kindergarten through Eighth grades have been discussing Respect and they have learned a secret word, “Toothpaste”.  Each student traced a design on a piece of paper with toothpaste.  Then, they were asked to put the toothpaste back into the toothpaste tube.  A few students were able to get some of the toothpaste back into the tube.  We talked about how toothpaste is like the words that we speak.  It’s very easy to say things that maybe we don’t really mean, but it’s very hard to take those words back.  Once the words are out of our mouths, others have heard what we have said, thus, we all need to say kind, nice, and respectful words.  When some toothpaste is placed back into the tube, we talked about how that is like saying, “I’m sorry”.  We also talked about how saying, “I’m sorry” does help a lot, but that we all need to try to remember to “Treat others the way we want to be treated”.

The character trait for the months of November and December are Caring ~ so very appropriate for this time of year.  The Caring Character Word is symbolized with the color, "red".

RED RIBBON CELEBRATION at WHITE CITY SCHOOLS---

We have celebrated Red Ribbon at our school.  Ms. Sizemore from the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition at Fort Riley, brought a wonderful Red Ribbon Program to our White City students.  We began our celebration first thing the morning of Wed., Oct. 17th with a Red Ribbon Kick-off.  The Pre-school through Fifth graders wore red and their Character Education hats of bright multi-colors.  The Sixth through Seniors wore the Character Colors with each class level and Red to symbolize our Red Ribbon day.  Mrs. Lacy Cleveland, our Science teacher and Mrs. Kansas, delivered a super message about being drug free and finding one’s passion in life.

The students were separated into various groups for the following activities. Everyone received Red Ribbons to wear during the day, pencils/pens, and Red Ribbon bracelets or key chains.  The Pre-Schoolers through Fifth graders planted red zinnia flower seeds into a Drug Free clay planters and signed drug free pledge cards.  They also watched Drug Free movies about Dusty the Dragon focusing on Tobacco usage or a movie featuring the Drug Monster.  Once the movies were watched with older students, they received “Drug Free” color books and enjoyed time with the older students while they colored in them.

The Eighth grade through Seniors went through rotations learning and participating in three stations.  One station was the “Intoxiclock” station.  The “Intoxiclock” is a computerized system where the students could press if they are a boy or a girl, their weight, and if they were to drink, how many drinks and the time of the drinking and what it would do to their bodies.  The “Intoxiclock” computerized system would show information as to how long a person would continue to have alcohol in their system and what their blood alcohol count would be.  This was a very informational station to our students.  Another station was the “Fatal Vision Goggles” station.  Students wore the fatal vision goggles and tried to take the sobriety test.  They realized the difficulty of the passing the sobriety test while wearing the fatal vision goggles.  The students also listened to a constant noise with headphones, worked a puzzle of matching sizes of shapes and had to count backwards from 100, all while wearing the fatal vision goggles.  The students kept track of their scores while doing some or all of these constraints.  They realized the difficulty of being able to focus and concentrate while having an altered state (fatal vision goggles).  The last station the students participated in was probably one of the most favorite stations.  The students drove or rode with a driver in a go-cart “Simulated Driving Experience”  The students would drive the go-cart around orange cones in a certain pattern that was in the Middle School Gym.  The next time the students drove the go-cart, the computer of the go-cart was changed and the students found that the simulated experience was much harder to keep the go-cart in between the orange cones as they were switched to an altered state with the driving experience of the go-cart.

Fourth and Fifth graders participated in a Poster Contest.  The winners were:  4th grade—Mikala and Jon; 5th Grade, Morgan and Tyler     The students received a Red Ribbon cup filled with key chains, balls, pencils, little bears, and pizza hut coupons.

Sixth through Eighth graders participated in an Essay Contest.  The winners of this contest were:   6th grade—Lia and Sam; 7th grade—Kaitlynn N. and Jace.

8th grade Essay Winners ~ Queen, Bridgett  and King, Rowe       The students received backpack sacks filled with many Red Ribbon items such as a Red Ribbon t-shirt, yo-yo, bracelets, pens, pencils, key chains, balls, etc.  The King and Queen were crowned with a King’s crown and Queen’s tiara.  They also received a backpack sack filled with the many Red Ribbon items.

The day ended with a Pre-school through Eighth grade Assembly to announce the winners of the Poster Contest and the Essay Contest.  The eighth grade King and Queen read their essays to the students after they were crowned King and Queen.

The first annual Red Ribbon Celebration was enjoyed by all, plus a learning experience while having fun!
